12 ANIMAL SIGNS

Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese zodiac — Sheng Xiao (生肖) — is one of the oldest and most enduring systems of personality and destiny in human history. Twelve animals, arranged in a fixed cycle that repeats every twelve years, shape the way billions of people understand themselves, their relationships, and the rhythms of fortune. Far from a relic of the ancient world, the zodiac remains a living part of everyday life across China and much of East Asia — consulted for marriage compatibility, career decisions, business partnerships, the timing of children, and the outlook for each new year.

In 2026, the cycle arrives at the Horse — the seventh animal, and a sign of vitality, courage, and forward momentum. The Year of the Fire Horse begins on 17 February 2026 and runs until 5 February 2027. What’s Your Zodiac Sign?

Your Chinese zodiac sign is determined by your birth year — but with an important caveat. Because Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year (anywhere from late January to mid-February), people born in January or February need to check whether their birthday falls before or after that year’s Chinese New Year. If you were born on 25 January 1990, for example, you may be a Snake rather than a Horse, because Chinese New Year that year didn’t begin until 27 January.

The simplest way to be sure is to use a zodiac calculator — or consult the year chart below and pay close attention to the start date if your birthday falls in January or February.

Origins of the Chinese Zodiac

The roots of the Chinese zodiac stretch back more than two thousand years, likely originating in the animal worship practices of ancient China and becoming formalised during the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE). The earliest known written record linking the twelve Earthly Branches to specific animals appears in texts from the Han Dynasty.

The most beloved origin story is the legend of the Great Race. The Jade Emperor, ruler of the heavens, declared that the order of the zodiac would be determined by a race across a great river. Each animal that arrived would earn a permanent place in the cycle. The Rat, clever and resourceful, hitched a ride on the Ox’s back and leapt ahead at the last moment to claim first place. The Ox, generous but outwitted, settled for second. The Tiger powered through the current for third. And so it continued — each animal’s finishing position reflecting something essential about its character.

The full story is rich with detail, rivalry, cunning, and kindness, and each animal’s journey reveals a different facet of the zodiac’s personality system. You can read each animal’s individual origin story on their sign pages — the links are throughout this guide.

What makes the zodiac more than a collection of folk tales is the depth of the system behind it. The twelve animals are not standalone symbols: they are woven into a sophisticated framework of Earthly Branches, Celestial Stems, Five Elements, and Yin-Yang philosophy that creates a nuanced, layered understanding of time, personality, and destiny.

Ben Ming Nian: Your Zodiac Birth Year

Every twelve years, your zodiac animal’s year comes around again. This is your Ben Ming Nian (本命年) — and contrary to what you might expect, tradition holds that it is not a lucky year at all.

In your Ben Ming Nian, you are said to clash with Tai Sui (太岁), the God of Age, making the year more volatile and unpredictable. Unexpected setbacks, misunderstandings, and reversals of fortune are more likely — not as punishment, but as a kind of cosmic pressure test.

The most widely practised remedy is to wear red throughout the year — red underwear, red socks, a red bracelet or string. Red is believed to repel the negative energy of the Tai Sui clash and draw protective fortune toward you. In many families, parents or grandparents give these red items as gifts at the start of the year, a quiet gesture of care and protection.

But the Chinese understanding of Ben Ming Nian is not fatalistic. The challenges of your zodiac year are seen as catalysts for growth — pressure that sharpens your judgement, reveals what truly matters, and ultimately leaves you stronger. Many people look back on their Ben Ming Nian as a pivotal year, the one that forced a necessary change they had been putting off.

In 2026, it is the Horse’s Ben Ming Nian. If you were born in a Horse year, read the fullHorse Horoscope 2026for guidance on navigating the year ahead.

The System Behind the Zodiac

The Chinese zodiac is often presented as a simple list of twelve animals, but behind those animals lies a remarkably sophisticated system that has been refined over millennia. Understanding the basics of this system reveals how Chinese astrologers determine personality, fortune, and compatibility.

Earthly Branches (地支, Dì Zhī)

The twelve Earthly Branches are the foundation of the zodiac. Originally a system for tracking years and time, each branch was eventually paired with an animal as a mnemonic. The branches are also assigned to the hours of the day (each covering a two-hour period), connecting the zodiac to daily rhythms as well as annual cycles.

The twelve branches: zǐ (子), chǒu (丑), yín (寅), mǎo (卯), chén (辰), sì (巳), wǔ (午), wèi (未), shēn (申), yǒu (酉), xū (戌), hài (亥).

Celestial Stems (天干, Tiān Gān)

Ten Celestial Stems pair with the twelve Earthly Branches to create a sixty-year calendrical cycle known as the Sexagenary Cycle (六十甲子, Liùshí Jiǎzǐ). This means that while the animal sign repeats every twelve years, the full combination of animal and element repeats only every sixty years — making each sixty-year cycle a unique sequence.

The ten stems: jiǎ (甲), yǐ (乙), bǐng (丙), dīng (丁), wù (戊), jǐ (己), gēng (庚), xīn (辛), rén (壬), guǐ (癸).

Five Elements (五行, Wǔ Xíng)

Each Celestial Stem is associated with one of the Five Elements — Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), and Water (水). The elements cycle through the zodiac in pairs (two consecutive years share the same element, one Yang and one Yin), layering additional personality traits, strengths, and vulnerabilities onto each animal sign. The elements also interact through generating and controlling cycles: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth yields Metal, Metal collects Water, and Water nourishes Wood.

Yin and Yang (阴阳)

The twelve animals alternate between Yang (active, outward, assertive) and Yin (receptive, inward, reflective). Yang animals are the Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, and Dog. Yin animals are the Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, and Pig.

Compatibility

One of the most popular uses of the Chinese zodiac is determining compatibility — in romance, friendship, and business. Two key systems govern zodiac compatibility:

Six Harmonies (六合, Liù Hé)are the six most naturally compatible pairings. These pairs complement each other instinctively, like two pieces of a puzzle clicking into place. They tend to understand each other without effort and provide the kind of support that works quietly in the background.

Rat & Ox · Tiger & Pig · Rabbit & Dog · Dragon & Rooster · Snake & Monkey · Horse & Goat

Three Harmonies (三合, Sān Hé)are four groups of three signs that share complementary strengths. Working as a team, these trios bring out the best in each other and cover one another’s weaknesses.

Rat, Dragon & Monkey · Ox, Snake & Rooster · Tiger, Horse & Dog · Rabbit, Goat & Pig

On the other side, signs that sit directly opposite each other in the zodiac cycle tend to clash. These are not doomed pairings — many such couples thrive — but they require more conscious effort, communication, and willingness to understand a fundamentally different worldview. The six opposing pairs are: Rat & Horse, Ox & Goat, Tiger & Monkey, Rabbit & Rooster, Dragon & Dog, Snake & Pig.

The Twelve Animals: Personality at a Glance

Rat(鼠, Shǔ)

Earthly Branch:Zǐ (子) ·Hours:23:00–01:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yang

Rats are the strategists of the zodiac — observant, resourceful, and quietly ambitious. They have an instinct for opportunity that others often miss, and their careful nature means they rarely find themselves without a safety net. Beneath a sociable exterior lies a private, calculating mind that is always two steps ahead. Rats are generous with those they value but guard their resources carefully against the wider world.

Culture:In Chinese tradition, the Rat’s association with the midnight hour reflects its alert, watchful nature. Because rats store food, they became symbols of surplus and household wealth. Their rapid reproduction also made them a symbol of fertility — some families traditionally prayed to rats for the blessing of children.

Ox(牛, Niú)

Earthly Branch:Chǒu (丑) ·Hours:01:00–03:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yin

The Ox is the zodiac’s most dependable force — patient, principled, and quietly powerful. Oxen do not seek the spotlight, but their steady presence holds families, teams, and communities together. They work harder and longer than almost anyone else, driven by a deep sense of duty. Their emotions run deep but are rarely displayed; when an Ox does lose their temper, the force of it surprises everyone.

Culture:The Ox is central to Chinese agricultural heritage. The pre-spring ritual of “whipping the spring ox” (打春, dǎ chūn) symbolised the start of a new farming year. An ox figure would be filled with grains and struck open, scattering seeds as a prayer for a bountiful harvest.

Tiger(虎, Hǔ)

Earthly Branch:Yín (寅) ·Hours:03:00–05:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yang

Tigers are born leaders — courageous, magnetic, and fiercely independent. They are drawn to justice and will throw themselves into any fight they believe is righteous, often with more passion than planning. Their confidence is infectious, and people naturally gravitate toward their strength. Tigers’ greatest struggle is their impulsiveness: they charge first and reflect later, which can lead to spectacular failures alongside their victories.

Culture:The Tiger is considered the king of all beasts in Chinese tradition and a guardian of children. In many regions, infants were dressed in tiger-patterned hats and shoes to ward off illness and evil spirits. The Tiger’s association with the pre-dawn hours reflects its nocturnal power — farmers could hear their roars echoing through the darkness.

Rabbit(兔, Tù)

Earthly Branch:Mǎo (卯) ·Hours:05:00–07:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yin

Rabbits are the diplomats of the zodiac — gentle, perceptive, and socially graceful. They move through the world with a quiet elegance that puts others at ease, and their sensitivity to atmosphere and emotion makes them exceptional readers of people. Rabbits avoid confrontation wherever possible, not out of weakness but because they understand that most battles are won without fighting. Their challenge is a tendency toward anxiety and overthinking when the world feels too harsh.

Culture:In Chinese mythology, the Rabbit is associated with the moon. The ancient Chinese saw not a “man in the moon” but a jade rabbit — the Moon Rabbit (玉兔, Yù Tù) — tirelessly grinding the elixir of immortality. The Rabbit’s connection to daybreak (05:00–07:00) reflects the moment when rabbits emerge to feed on the morning dew.

Dragon(龙, Lóng)

Earthly Branch:Chén (辰) ·Hours:07:00–09:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yang

The Dragon is the zodiac’s most awe-inspiring sign — ambitious, visionary, and wrapped in an air of mystery. Dragons think in grand terms and are untroubled by the mundane concerns that occupy others. They can appear aloof, but beneath that exterior is a heart capable of extraordinary passion and generosity. Once a Dragon commits to a goal, their energy and determination are virtually unstoppable. Their weakness is a tendency toward arrogance and a difficulty accepting help.

Culture:The Dragon is the most revered creature in Chinese culture, symbolising imperial power, heavenly authority, and supreme fortune. Its hours (07:00–09:00) correspond to the time when morning mist rises — folklore holds that dragons rode the fog to descend to earth. Paired with the Phoenix, the Dragon represents a harmonious marriage and the balance of Yin and Yang.

Snake(蛇, Shé)

Earthly Branch:Sì (巳) ·Hours:09:00–11:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yin

Snakes are the deep thinkers of the zodiac — intuitive, strategic, and intensely private. They observe far more than they reveal, and their judgements, when they finally arrive, are usually razor-sharp. Snakes value depth over breadth in all things — they would rather have one true friend than a hundred acquaintances, one great love than a string of flings. Their reserve can be mistaken for coldness, but those who earn a Snake’s trust discover a warmth and devotion that runs astonishingly deep.

Culture:The Snake carries a complex cultural legacy. While sometimes associated with cunning, the Snake also connects to Nǚ Wā (女娲), the creator goddess in Chinese mythology, who had a human head and a serpent’s body. The Snake’s hours (09:00–11:00) mark the time when morning fog clears and snakes emerge to warm themselves in the sun — the character for sì (巳) was originally drawn to resemble a coiled serpent.

Horse(马, Mǎ)

Earthly Branch:Wǔ (午) ·Hours:11:00–13:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yang

Horses are the zodiac’s great adventurers — energetic, optimistic, and irresistibly alive. They radiate warmth and confidence that draw people toward them effortlessly, and their enthusiasm for life is genuinely infectious. Horses need freedom the way others need security: they wilt in confinement and flourish in open spaces, both physical and emotional. Their challenge is sustaining focus and commitment once the initial excitement of a pursuit fades.

Culture:The Horse holds a place of deep historical importance in Chinese civilisation. As the most vital of the six domestic animals, horses were indispensable in transport, agriculture, and warfare. The celebrated phrase 马到成功 (mǎ dào chéng gōng) — success upon the horse’s arrival — captures the essence of the Horse’s symbolism: swift, decisive achievement. The Horse’s midday hours (11:00–13:00) reflect its peak vitality, the time when horses gallop most joyfully in open fields.

Goat(羊, Yáng)

Earthly Branch:Wèi (未) ·Hours:13:00–15:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yin

Goats are the gentle souls of the zodiac — kind-hearted, creative, and deeply empathetic. They would rather absorb discomfort themselves than cause it in others, and their quiet determination is easily underestimated. Beneath their soft exterior is a surprisingly firm sense of what they want, and they are skilled at getting their way through patience and persuasion rather than force. Goats thrive in environments where beauty, harmony, and emotional safety are valued.

Culture:The Goat is a symbol of filial piety in Chinese tradition — the image of a young goat kneeling to nurse represents respect and gratitude toward parents. In mythology, Xiè Zhì (獬豸), a one-horned goat, served as the assistant to Gāo Yáo (皋陶), the god of justice. The Goat’s early afternoon hours (13:00–15:00) mark the time when shepherds led their flocks out to graze on sun-dried pastures.

Monkey(猴, Hóu)

Earthly Branch:Shēn (申) ·Hours:15:00–17:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yang

Monkeys are the zodiac’s quickest minds — inventive, curious, and endlessly adaptable. They approach life as a series of puzzles to solve and games to win, and their intelligence is matched by a mischievous charm that makes them entertaining company. When a Monkey is engaged, there is no more resourceful or creative problem-solver in the zodiac. When they are bored, however, their attention drifts, and quality can suffer. Monkeys value cleverness highly — sometimes too highly, at the expense of patience and emotional depth.

Culture:Several Chinese legends describe the Monkey as an ancestor of humanity, reflecting its intelligence and human-like qualities. Monkeys are also associated with peaches — the symbol of longevity in Chinese culture — and over time, the Monkey itself became a symbol of long life. The late afternoon hours (15:00–17:00) correspond to the time when monkeys play most actively in the cooling forest.

Rooster(鸡, Jī)

Earthly Branch:Yǒu (酉) ·Hours:17:00–19:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yin

Roosters are the perfectionists of the zodiac — observant, honest, and meticulously put together. They have an almost preternatural ability to sense what others are thinking, paired with a directness that can feel either refreshing or confronting depending on the audience. Roosters are hardworking, highly organised, and take pride in their appearance and reputation. They are natural planners with an eye for detail, though their exacting standards can make them critical of both themselves and others.

Culture:The Rooster was traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits — its dawn crowing was thought to scatter the darkness and the malevolent forces within it. In ancient China, sworn brothers sealed their bond by dripping rooster blood into wine and drinking together. The Rooster’s evening hours (17:00–19:00) mark the time when the birds were gathered back into their roosts — and the character yǒu (酉) bears a resemblance to the character for wine (酒, jiǔ), connecting this hour to the evening meal.

Dog(狗, Gǒu)

Earthly Branch:Xū (戌) ·Hours:19:00–21:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yang

Dogs are the moral compass of the zodiac — loyal, principled, and deeply protective of those they love. They would rather suffer quietly than let someone they care about face harm alone. Dogs are honest to a fault and have an almost instinctive ability to read people’s true intentions. They make steadfast friends and devoted partners, though their idealism can tip into anxiety and pessimism when the world fails to live up to their standards. Dogs find their deepest satisfaction in lives built around service, integrity, and genuine human connection.

Culture:In Chinese tradition, the Dog is humanity’s faithful companion. The hours of 19:00–21:00 reflect the time when households made their final security rounds before sleep, with the family dog trailing faithfully behind. In the Qin and Han dynasties, stone dogs were worshipped as protectors. In Guangdong, the tradition of naming dogs Wàng Cái (旺财, “prosperous wealth”) persists to this day — a playful nod to the dog’s bark (旺旺, wàng wàng).

Pig(猪, Zhū)

Earthly Branch:Hài (亥) ·Hours:21:00–23:00 ·Yin/Yang:Yin

Pigs are the warm hearts of the zodiac — generous, optimistic, and genuinely kind. They approach life with an openness and sincerity that puts others at ease, and their natural inclination is to share whatever they have. Pigs are sharper than their easygoing manner suggests: they observe quietly, think clearly, and often understand a situation long before they let on. Their vulnerability lies in their trust — Pigs give it freely, and less scrupulous people sometimes take advantage of that generosity.

Culture:The Pig is a symbol of wealth and abundance in Chinese culture. Its round face and large ears are considered signs of fortune and prosperity. The Pig’s late-night hours (21:00–23:00) correspond to the time when pigs rustle and feed — farmers traditionally gave the final feeding of the day during this period. The character hài (亥) is the last of the twelve Earthly Branches, giving the Pig its position as the cycle’s gentle, contented close.
